Dharanboodhoo School was registered as a public school on 20 November 1979. The school's motto is ""Education with good discipline”. The school used to be managed as a public school under the supervision of the Island Office. It was changed to a government school on 1st August 2005. In 2006, the school started teaching as a secondary school. and in 2008, the Cambridge O/L examination and SSC examination were held for the first time
