Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu has been appointed to the Executive Committee (ExCo) of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) Board, highlighting the Maldives’ growing role in global education leadership.

As a member of the ExCo, Dr. Shafeeu will play a key role in providing strategic guidance, overseeing policy implementation, and ensuring effective governance of GPE’s global education initiatives. In addition to this new role, Dr. Shafeeu continues to serve as the Board Member representing the Asia and Pacific Constituency, where he advocates for equitable, inclusive, and quality education across the region.

His appointment reflects both his extensive experience in education leadership and the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening international cooperation in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4 – ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education for all.

The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) is the world’s largest multilateral fund dedicated to strengthening education systems in developing countries. In the Maldives, GPE currently funds the THAIBA Project, a USD 9.5 million initiative focused on equity and inclusion as a policy priority.

Key activities of the project include improving education quality through better access, teacher training, strengthening school leadership, promoting inclusive learning environments, and data-driven planning to ensure equitable learning for all children, including those with disabilities and from marginalized communities.
