A nationwide “Early Learning” program has been launched in the Maldives through a collaboration between The Boeing Company and Room to Read. This initiative aims to strengthen primary education and promote Dhivehi literacy among primary students across the country.
As part of the program, Room to Read, the National Institute of Education (NIE), and the Ministry of Education worked together to translate 15 children’s books into Dhivehi. These books will be distributed to all government schools in both print and digital formats. This initiative marks a significant step in the government’s ongoing efforts to promote the Dhivehi language and enhance early grade learning.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, Minister of Education Dr. Ismail Shafeeu stated,
"Building a strong reading culture is essential to our national education strategy. These book adaptations in Dhivehi, funded by Boeing and implemented by Room to Read, will bring high-quality literature and engaging learning spaces directly to our students. This strengthens early-grade reading and supports our broader goal of improving learning outcomes across the Maldives."
Room to Read is a global education non-profit organization working in partnership with Boeing Global Engagement (BGE) of The Boeing Company. Through this collaboration, several initiatives have been carried out worldwide to promote early grade literacy, including developing books in local languages, improving library facilities, and supporting structured literacy programs to enhance learning outcomes for children.
