A grant of USD 200,000 (MVR 3,084,000) has been approved by the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) to support efforts in strengthening climate resilience within the education sector.
The initiative will support the development of a climate-adaptive education system capable of withstanding and recovering from climate-related shocks and natural disasters. It will be implemented under GPE’s Climate Smart Education Systems (CSES) technical initiative, led by the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development, in collaboration with UNESCO and Save the Children Australia. The project will run until May 2027.
The CSES programme focuses on the following key areas:
- Climate finance access: Strengthening institutional capacity to mobilise international climate funding for the education sector.
- Curriculum and teacher development: Integrating climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction into the national curriculum, alongside targeted teacher training.
- School infrastructure resilience: Improving the climate resilience of school facilities, including structural assessments with emphasis on atoll schools.
- Data and planning systems: Enhancing the Education Management Information System (EMIS) to support evidence-based, climate-informed decision-making.
This initiative builds on ongoing efforts under the Transforming Education (THAIBHA) programme, which is also supported by GPE, and continues to advance sector-wide education development and resilience planning.
