The school was registered on 1st May 1982 and initially operated under the name Madhrasathul Sulthan Mohamed by the island office. The foundation for the school building was laid on 5th April 1985, and it officially opened on 12th December 1991. It became a government school in 2007. On 17th September 2017, the school's name was changed to Sulthan Mohamed School to honor the king of Dhevvadhoo and preserve his legacy.
