Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu has  attended the Board of Directors meeting of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) in his capacity as the Board Member for the Aisa Pacific Constituency.

This meeting was held in Dubai, from3-5 December. The Minister is accompanied by the Technical Advisor and Minister of State for Education Dr. Ahmed Mohamed.

During the meeting, Dr. Shafeeu has engaged in discussions on various decisions related to GPE’s operations, upcoming activities, and the budget planning for the next three years.

GPE is one of the largest international funding bodies providing aid to enhance education systems in developing countries. The Maldives became a member of GPE in 2019, and since then, GPE has played a key role in improving the country’s education system.

The GPE has recently provided a US$9.5 million grant to the Ministry of Education for the 'Thaiba' project, which aims to transform the education sector in the Maldives. The three grants to implement this agenda are: a US$5 million System Transformation Grant, a US$1.5 million System Capacity Grant, and a US$3 million Multiplier Grant. These funds will be used to improve learning opportunities for students with special needs, strengthen institutional planning, and improve financial management and monitoring across the education system.
