The Minister of Education Dr. Ismail Shafeeu has called on academically high-performing students to consider careers in the education sector. The appeal was made during the Minister’s address at the third session of the High Achievers' Awards 2024 ceremony, held at the Social Centre.
In his speech, the Minister highlighted the growing challenges faced by the education system, noting that schools currently require around 600 secondary teachers and 200 primary teachers. He also emphasized the difficulty in recruiting teachers for key subjects such as Islamic Studies and Dhivehi, particularly in some islands.
“This is a challenge we can only overcome together,” the Minister said. “We need good students to step up and take on roles as teachers, principals, and policymakers in the education sector.”
Citing global examples, the Minister referenced countries with strong education systems—Finland, Singapore, and Japan—where top-performing students often pursue teaching careers. He emphasized that such models contribute significantly to national development.
“Good teachers create good students, and good students build the nation,” the Minister concluded, reinforcing the crucial role of educators in shaping the future.
