The Ministry of Education took part in the national torch run held to celebrate the historic “Generational Ban” on tobacco. Minister of Education Dr. Ismail Shafeeu, along with ministry staff, school students, and teachers, joined the event to mark this significant national milestone.

The 24-hour torch run saw the participation of approximately 8,000 people, including ministers, staff from State-Owned Enterprises, athletes, and sports clubs. The event symbolized nationwide unity and collective commitment toward building a healthier, tobacco-free future for the next generation.

The torch run was organized by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, the World Health Organization (WHO), the Health Protection Agency (HPA), and other government institutions.

Speaking during a special telethon organized by Public Service Media (PSM) to commemorate the Generational Ban, Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu highlighted the achievement as a source of national pride. He stated that by implementing this policy, the Maldives has set a global example in public health and youth protection.

The Generational Ban on Tobacco, enacted into law, prohibits anyone born on or after January 1, 2007, from engaging in any tobacco-related activity. This pioneering move positions the Maldives among the world’s leading nations in tobacco control and the promotion of sustainable, healthy living.
